October 2013: Amazing alumni at Amazon and Bing

Posted By Seattle Hub, Sunday, October 26, 2014

Seattle hub alumni gathered in October to hear AIESEC stories from two amazing alumni, Pedro Huerta (MCP Germany '96, PAI '97) and Ray Kemper (Tennessee, AIESEC US VP Southern Region '87-88). Pedro works at Amazon as Kindle Director of Content, and previously was President & CEO of Random House Mondadori Mexico. He shared insights on his work on Kindle in Latin America, as well as memories of his days at AI and AIESEC Germany. Ray works at Microsoft as Global Director Marketing for Bing Search Advertising, and previously served on the BOA of AIESEC Georgia Tech. Ray shared his career path starting with a traineeship for Mastercard in Chile, where he dodged tear gas during the Pinochet riots, and his boss was Sebastian Pinera (now president of Chile). Ray's other career highlights include a VIP pass at the 1996 Olympics, and several years as an expat in Latin America. In his current role at Microsoft in Bing, he has helped with job referrals for two alumni (Tina Rozul, San Jose; Frances Donegan-Ryan, Seattle).

Thank you to our speakers Pedro and Ray! Thanks also to Ray for hosting at his office. Our next alumni event goes to the eastside on Nov 7.

April 2014: AIESEC Life Seattle Hub Spring Happy Hour

Posted By Seattle Hub, Sunday, October 26, 2014

The AIESEC Life Seattle Hub got together on April 15th to celebrate spring and give referrals to support the local chapter.  25 alumni and students met at Buckely's in Belltown.  Erica Cheng, the Local Committee President for AIESEC Seattle, explained how the exchange program works today, where AIESEC Seattle stands in terms of incoming and outgoing exchanges, as well as some ideas of what trainees could do in local companies.  After Erica, Jim Dickeson said a few words about why he has gotten more involved and why alumni should give back.  At the end of the presentations, alumni wrote down names of people that they thought should hear about the AIESEC program.  In total, 15 referrals were given to the local committee.  Thank you to all who attended!

AIESEC Life Seattle Hub – Alumni Career Chats with New Grads

Posted By Seattle Hub, Thursday, October 2, 2014

AIESEC Life Seattle Hub – Alumni Career Chats with New Grads

To help new graduates who recently joined AIESEC Life, the Seattle hub assisted with arranging alumni career chats.  New grads were matched with alumni professionals to get advice on entering the work force, resumes, interviewing, and job hunting tips.  Many thanks to all the alumni professionals who volunteered and gave time to meet with our newly graduated AIESEC Life members!  Thanks also to LCP Ong Wan-Jun for her initiative and coordination.  Below are quotes from some of the alumni career chats.

We had a good chat at his office with a couple of his team members at Zooppa. It was a great time!

Crystal Zhu, International Studies; AIESEC Seattle ’12-14

Wil Merritt, Zooppa.com; AIESEC Colorado, AIESEC International envoy to Africa ‘84

 ---

As my graduation is creeping up and job hunting becomes ever more important, I wanted some advice on whether I should go into public accounting or private accounting first. As someone who has had experience working in public accounting, Mark was able to give me insights on the topic. He advised me to go into public accounting first because the network that I could build would be greatly beneficial in whatever field I choose to pursue should I decide to leave public accounting.

Joyce Shangkuan, Accounting; AIESEC Seattle VP Finance ‘13

Mark Ostrow, RK2 Advisory; AIESEC Oregon LCP ‘93

---

“My biggest takeaway from Gerry was to just go for things. To try out all the things that I want to do now because you don't want to look back in the future and have a sense of regret.  I really enjoyed that this alumni career talk was with someone that was working at the same company that I am, and that has had a very diverse and decorated history in AIESEC because he was able to help me connect the dots on how my AIESEC experience could be leveraged in the workforce.”

Colin Chang, Entrepreneurship, AIESEC Seattle VP Outgoing Exchange ’13

Gerry Berton, Microsoft; AIESEC Tufts, AIESEC US SD, AIESEC International ‘89-90

---

"The conversation I had with Bobby was helpful not only on my career path but also on my life in general."

Will Huang, Economics; AIESEC Seattle VP Business Development ‘12

Bobby Bakshi; AIESEC Bombay LCP, trainee to the US (Madison) ‘86

April 2013: Renowned Alumnus Mike Smith Address Alumni during Seattle Cruise

Posted By Colorado Hub, Thursday, September 25, 2014

AIESEC alumni had the chance to enjoy a cruise on Thursday, March 28, to welcome members of the AIESEC US national team and the Local Committee Presidents who were visiting Seattle for the National President's Meeting.  This is the first time AIESEC Seattle has hosted an AIESEC US conference in over 20 years. Local committee members and alumni enjoyed the opportunity to meet the AIESEC US leaders right there in Seattle.

Headlining the cruise was AIESEC alumnus Michael Smith (Madison '83), who is currently CEO at Full Circle, an organic food delivery service, and serves on REI’s Board of Directors.  Previously, he was president and CEO of Classmates.com, a leader in online social networking and the fourth largest paid content site on the Internet.  Mike also served as President of Nordstrom.com and orchestrated a turn-around for the company that resulted in its first quarterly profit. In 1999, he founded LifeSketch.com, the first scrapbooking site and prior to that, served as president and CEO of Lands’ End Inc.  While launching LandsEnd.com , he executed another company turn-around that led to record sales and profits.  Michael was a member of AIESEC Madison, and his company Lands End was a major sponsor of AIESEC US in the 1990s.

When sharing highlights from his career during the cruise, Mike stated that the one thing he has enjoyed most is mentoring in order to help others grow into leaders.  He also encouraged new graduates, who are job hunting, to be open to taking the road less traveled.  After graduation, he turned down a better salary at a bigger company for a more interesting offer at Lands' End -- where he later launched their online sales and became President and CEO.  A key insight from his AIESEC days and carried throughout his career, he remarked on meeting so many people from different backgrounds yet everyone shares the same basic needs This knowledge has enabled him to find common ground with others and be successful in teamwork.

AIESEC Life would like to thank Mike for taking the time out to speak with our alumni.  We would also like to send a big thank you to Arthur de Hann  (member of the AIESEC Seattle Board of Advisors) and Lili Hein (Seattle Hub Co-Leader and past President of AIESEC Life) for generously sponsoring the cruise!  You are a shining example for other alumni to follow!

October 2012: A Big Thank you to Core Team!

Posted By Administration, Thursday, September 25, 2014

This week, as we are wrapping up our AIESEC Life membership drive, we want to give a BIG Thank You to our amazing core team members in Seattle HUB, who have devoted their time, efforts and resources in making this membership drive in Seattle a great success. We are proud to say that we are now leading the pack with AIESEC Life in raising new members and we hope to see the other HUBs catching up to us in our final week of membership drive!

As Lili Hein (Seattle Hub Leader) remarked with a big smile, "I can't do it alone!", I believe each one of our core team members pitched in. With however our busy schedule maybe and how mentality worn out our days went, we remember AIESEC Life in our lives in building a deeply connected network in this region. Our results so far is a show of "How little stuff in life matters!" We hope to continue our momentum in our last week of membership drive, and with the years to come.

November 3rd, 2012, we will be hosting our AIESEC Life Seattle Alumni Dinner together with AIESEC Seattle LC PEBBLES Conference. Together, we will be welcoming AIESEC LC New Members along with Alumni members alike. This is great opportunity to get to know our region at this event featuring special speakers and active members in sharing their experiences. For more detail, check out: http://aieseclife.org/groups/seattle/events/

Lastly, we'd like to share our Seattle Hub Core Team photos to remember our team work and group fun!

Apparently, we have been hard at work since September in brainstorming ideas and dividing tasks to make our membership drive a success. (I guess you really can't blame us for our solid results.)
To keep our momentum, we met in October with Arcadiy's (1st right in photo) help to secure a Microsoft Office looking over Greater Seattle Region in Bellevue, WA. With the beautiful sunset overlooking the lake and shores, we brainstormed some more!
Lili, I personally think this should be your new profile picture! We thank you for pulling this together!

Summer 2012: Alumni Cooking Event

Posted By Seattle Hub, Thursday, September 25, 2014

Delicious is the keyword to describe AIESEC Seattle's Alum event for July, as we joined Rachel Duboff (AIESEC Alum 1991), who is a personal chief with Thyme to Nourish. The tender teriyaki chicken and the mouth watering Asian Fusion Salad will be well remembered into our Aug. BBQ and Potluck!

Summer 2012: Seattle alums meet at Dragonfish

Posted By Seattle Hub, Thursday, September 25, 2014

The Seattle hub met with visiting NY hub leader Cathy Shelton at Dragonfish Café in Seattle in June. Alumni and LC members joined in to learn how to connect and give back locally. Along with our special guest from New York, Cathy Shelton, who brought great enthusiasm in sharing her experiences in building and growing the AIESEC Life NYC Hub, we also have found the Georgia Tech connection within our midst.

Pearl Li (AIESEC Seattle Alum 2006) stepped forward to join Lili Hein as co-leader of the Seattle Hub while keeping connected with current LCP Seattle Hanne Ockert-Axelsson ( Boland Award Recipient). With the help of all our members, active alums and friends, AIESEC Seattle HUB looks forward in building a wonderful year to enrich our AIESEC Life all around.
