May 2014: AIESEC Alumni and Students Host an International Business Day at Northern Illinois University

Posted By Chicago Hub, Monday, October 27, 2014

By Heather Blahnik (Madison '96, US '98, AI '99)

Recently, AIESEC Northern Illinois University, with the help of dedicated alumni, hosted an International Business Day which attracted over 200 students.  The objective of the day was to host a major event on campus to promote AIESEC at NIU, to form a stronger relationship with the Northern Illinois University College of Business and the new International Affairs Department, and to have Jerry Allison (NIU 1962), founder and CEO of AJC International, a multi-billion dollar food wholesaler, share his AIESEC and business experience with students.

The event's organization was spearheaded by Sean Parnell (NIU 1995), who was instrumental in the re-starting of AIESEC at NIU six years ago.  NIU had no AIESEC chapter after it was disbanded in 1996, but this changed when Jerry Allison, one of the original co-founders of AIESEC NIU in 1960, came to give a speech at the NIU College of Business and talked with Dean Schoenbachler about starting an AIESEC chapter in 2007. Since Jerry is based in Atlanta, someone physically closer to Dekalb, IL was needed to keep the ball rolling.  Dave Welton and Sean Parnell stepped up and visited Dean Schoenbachler, who put them in touch with Assistant Professor Peter Magnusson who is from Sweden and had formed an international business club. Dave and Sean talked about AIESEC with him and the students of the international business club and they got excited enough to start a chapter. They then pulled together some financial support from AIESEC alumni and from NIU and AIESEC NIU was re-born.  Sean said the following about why he worked so hard to get AIESEC back at NIU:

It caused me great heartache that for 12 years AIESEC was not available for NIU's population of 25,000 students - countless traineeships were not realized and countless lives were not transformed in the way AIESEC can. When the opportunity arose to get the chapter started again, I saw my chance, got involved, and now NIU has the opportunity of AIESEC again and many students have benefited over these past six years.

After the students ran with re-establishing the local committee, Sean formed the AIESEC NIU Board of Advisors, became Chairman and, with the help of Dave and others, recruited a new board. Knowing that alumni represent the continuity and core fundraising for any local chapter, Connie Yang and Sean co-founded the AIESEC Life Chicago Hub, which has been very helpful in supporting AIESEC NIU, AIESEC Northwestern and a few other chapters nearby.  A little while later, Sean and Connie handed the leadership of the AIESEC Life Hub to Jill Olle and Sarah Ketvirtis and today it is one of the strongest hubs in the country.

Sean says the following about what he feels are the best ways to support a local committee:

* Give money for activities that will help the chapter grow.  This should be not just so a few students can go to conferences far away which can be abused and lead to problems

* Provide guidance for chapter activities and challenge the students when necessary.  Leverage our experience so the chapter can avoid making mistakes of the past

* Recruit other alumni to become involved from both a time and money standpoint

* Cultivate and introduce students to traineeship opportunities with people we know

* Be available to speak and attend AIESEC events, both for local chapter events and alumni events where students attend

* Work with the university go get support.  This should include the recruitment of a good faculty advisor that has interest, energy and time to work with the chapter

* Provide non-monetary resources, such as speakers, event space, and introductions to people in the business world which can be for traineeships or other things

If you would like to contact Sean to get more information on the event, you can email him at sparnell@innovaxisinc.com.

If you would like to join an AIESEC Life Hub, you can learn more here.

If you are not yet a member of AIESEC Life, consider joining today and support the growth of a healthy AIESEC alumni community.

May 2014: AIESEC Life Chicago Hub Spring Networking and Outreach Event

Posted By Chicago Hub, Monday, October 27, 2014

By Sarah Ketvertis (AIESEC Life Chicago Hub Leader, MI '04/ US '05-08)

AIESEC Life Chicago had a very successful Spring Networking and Outreach Event on Thursday April 24th!  Over 60 people attended including 42 alumni, 3 trainees and 16 students from AIESEC Northwestern and AIESEC Northern Illinois.  There were 10 countries and 15 US Local Committees represented.  We started the event with brief updates about the Chicago Hub and our local committees.  We were fortunate to have alumnus Henry Balani, who currently serves as Head of Innovation at Accuity, share some impactful remarks about his rewarding experience working with AIESEC to bring trainees to the US and why he has gotten more involved with AIESEC.  Thank you Henry!

Next we cued up a few popular AIESEC songs - We are a Family, Ojos Asi, We like to Party, Don't Stop Me Now and Cotton Eyed Joe - and facilitated a dynamic speed networking session where attendees looked for someone who had traveled to 20+ countries, works in marketing/sales, is an entrepreneur or had been to 2+ international conferences, etc.   As our Chicago Hub continues to grow (we had 22 new alumni faces at this event alone!), we want to provide alumni opportunities to expand their personal networks.

We also gave alumni the opportunity to not only grow their network but share their network.  In total 33 leads were given to the local committees by 26 different alumni!  We are so fortunate to have such an active and giving alumni community in Chicago!  Thank you for helping us meet and surpass our goal nationally of 100 leads generated by alumni.  The Chicago Hub continues to amaze me.  B-R-A-V-O, B-R-A-V-I-S-I-M-O AIESEC Life Chicago Hub!

Been meaning to attend an event?  Two summers ago a large group of alumni enjoyed an evening cruise on Lake Michigan together and thanks to popular demand we have scheduled a Chicago Brew Cruise on Friday August 8th run by Shoreline.  We will meet at Navy Pier's Gateway Park to board at 7:45 pm.  You must be 21 or older.  Cost is $39 per person.  You are responsible for RSVPing and buying your own ticket.  RSVP here:  http://www.aieseclife.org/events/chicago-brew-cruise-2/

March 2014: Chicago Hub Laces Up Their Skates for Old Fashioned Winter Fun

Posted By Chicago Hub, Monday, October 27, 2014

Sarah Ketvirtis, Kevin Yang and Jennie Rademacher test out the ice.

If you can't beat it-join it! That's what the Chicago Hub decided to do for a rather chilly outing ice skating in beautiful downtown Chicago's Millennium Park. A few brave souls made it out, including trainee turned full time Accutiy employee, Kevin Yang. This was his first time ice skating ever and picked it up in no time!

Sarah, a Michigan native, is used to ice rinks in her back yard and cruised around like Apolo Ohno. Jill Olle made it out (but missed the photo-op) and all warmed up after with some snacks at Cosi.

Each year we hold two signature alumni events in Chicagoland. Our spring event is Thursday April 24 at Jefferson Tap. Join us and over 30 fellow AIESEC alum from around the world as we meet, greet and network over tasty libation. Register now!

Dec 2013: Chicago winter can't bring down AIESECers' Holiday Cheer!

Posted By Chicago Hub, Monday, October 27, 2014

About 15 AIESECers including our trainee Kevin Yang braved the cold December 10th to share in some Gluhwein, delicious food and Christmas spirit at Chicago's famous Christkindlmarket. Thanks to fellow AIESECer Mark Tomkins, we had a cozy seat inside again this year to gather together and not only celebrate our success in raising over 40 members but reflect on 2013 and get excited for what's in store for 2014.  We stayed warm with hot wine (Gluhwein), authentic German food and sharing our favorite holiday memories.

The Christkindlmarket has become a Chicago Hub tradition as the event is a truly authentic German Christmas market experience and everyone enjoys connecting in the festive environment. We are also very proud to have such an active alum, Mark Tomkins, as the Vice President of the German Chamber of commerce sponsoring and attending the event!

Cheers to 2013 and an amazing 2014!

Nov 2013: Standing Room Only at AIESEC Talks in Chicago

Posted By Chicago Hub, Monday, October 27, 2014

"Hey AIESEC!" "Hey What!" Chicago just had a spectacular fall event! The Chicago Hub hosted an incredibly successful event Friday November 15th bringing together over 70 attendees to network, share ideas and hear inspiring stories. The event was hosted on the 24th floor of the beautiful AT&T Center with fabulous views overlooking downtown Chicago. The event was sold out with standing room only. Over 35 alumni attended, 30 students from 5 LCs, 3 trainees and a few 'AIESEC fans' in total representing 13 LCs and 5 countries. A big shout out goes to the AIESECers from @Purdue and @UofI who traveled long distances to be at the event.

The event, AIESEC Talks featured four alumni sharing their ideas and passions in short form presentations. The engaging speakers, Henry Balani (@London and UChicago), Michelle Gansle (@Austin), Sean Parnell (@Northern Illinois) and J.T. Allen (@Michigan), shared key messages around giving back, being open to endless possibilities, AIESECers as entrepreneurs, knowing what you stand for, and more including how AIESEC has impacted their life.

The event opened with networking, information on the membership drive and a raffle with items donated and procured by alumni. A special thanks to the AIESEC alumni who generously donated to the raffle- Colleen Graneto (La Pucara Jewelry), Lee Greene (The Scrumptious Pantry), Sarah Ketvirtis (Peoples Garment Company) and Michelle Gansle (Wrigley).

The event also raised an additional 23 paid memberships which will not only support the Chicago hub in hosting more events like AIESEC Talks to bring together alumni, trainees and students but a portion of the funds will be put towards a scholarship to send a local member of AIESEC abroad on a traineeship. In total AIESEC Chicago raised 52 AIESEC Life memberships during our Fall 2013 Campaign. We surpassed our goal and more than doubled the amount of memberships raised in the 2012 campaign! Go Chicago!

A huge thanks goes out to all those who support AIESEC Life as a paid member and those who attended our AIESEC Talks event. Special kudos go out to all those who donated their time and energy to make this event a huge success. Thank you to our speakers J.T. Allen, Henry Balani, Michelle Gansle and Sean Parnell. And to our event planners, coordinators and helpers Michelle Gansle (double agent), Sheila Geoghegan, Colleen Graneto and Jennie Rademacher!

On October 3rd, alumni met at the historic German-style Berghoff Restaurant in downtown Chicago for wiener scnitzel, jumbo pretzles and large steins of German beer. The Oktoberfest themed event attracted over twenty AIESECers including students from Northwestern and their trainee, Kevin Yang, as well as alumni from the city and various suburbs. Sept 2013: Chicago Alumni Welcome New Trainee

Posted By Chicago Hub, Monday, October 27, 2014
In August, Chicago alumni gathered with Northwestern students and our newest Trainee, Kevin Yang. The event moved from Millennium Park into a restaurant nearby when a rainy day made it difficult to enjoy jazz on the pavilion lawn. The group of 15 enjoyed food and drinks while welcoming our newest trainee, catching up with fellow alumni, and learning about the Summer National Conference's (SNC) highlights, including Northwestern's awards.

Welcome Kevin! Kevin arrived in early August for a 3 month traineeship, working with Accuity,Inc. His traineeship is in the field of Compliance Solutions and Japanese/Chinese Language Consulting. Kevin consults Acuity, Inc. on the use of Japanese in business and government documents and databases. He performs quality control on Japanese language output, helps create a dictionary of standardized names, builds a name-matching system, and assists with managing the data bases and a core system development for the company. Kevin is enjoying his traineeship and loving his time in the U.S.!

Congrats Northwestern! AIESEC Northwestern was the proud recipient of multiple awards at SNC. Karan Goenka, Local Committee President, and Yang Xu, Vice President of Incoming Exchange, received top sales people awards. Bravo Bravisimo!!! Northwestern also won the award for the best Board of Advisers. Huge congrats and thank you to all the alumni who are part of Northwesterns BoA and to those alumni who have coached the local AIESECers and shared leads. AIESEC Northewestern is doing a phenomenal job and events like the AIESEC Connection Event in April where alumni come out in masses and help generate leads shows what a dedicated group of alumni and strong hub community we have in Chicago!

If you are interested in getting involved with the hub community in Chicago to attend local events, meet our trainees or work more closely with the LCs please contact the Chicago Hub Leader, SarahKetvirtis@gmail.com. Invitations for our Fall Signature Event in November will be going out soon!

May 2013: Chicago Hub Hits Wrigleyville

Posted By Chicago Hub, Thursday, September 25, 2014

On Thursday, May 16th, AIESECers gathered in Chicago for drinks, food and good laughs. The weather was beautiful (finally!) and the group enjoyed the famous Wrigleyville atmosphere. The turnout brought together an exciting group of local Chicago LC members from Northwestern and NIU. Alumni attendees represented were also from as far away as South Bend, Indiana and Madison, Wisconsin! These guys traveled in excess of 4 hours just to network with alumni and AIESECers at our event! A big shout out and thanks to CJ Penkert, current Madison LC member (VP of External Relations), and Ben Murunga, alumnus from AIESEC Kenya for making our event that much more successful! We also had some first time alum with us!  We hope to see everyone at many more AIESEC Life Chicago events!

Join us at our AIESEC Life Chicago June ALUMNite Happy Hour on Thursday June 13th downtown in the loop!
