March 2015 Spring Alumni Event Brings Out New Faces

Posted By Colorado Hub, Tuesday, March 24, 2015

We had a great turnout for our Spring Alumni event, hosted by our very own Alum Jeff Popiel. We had about about 15 alums attend of which 5 faces we hadn't seen in awhile or ever before!

The new faces were:

- David Geras - Colorado ('84)

- Matt Landess - Colorado ('92)

- Ashley Dyke – Atlanta

- Andrew Thackray – Michigan

- Joel Sanders – while he is a known alumni, he hasn’t attended an event for years because he lives in Portland. He came directly from the airport to the event!

Alumni put their heads together and came up with about 12 traineeship leads for the Local Committees and we had about 8 members each from the Boulder and Denver LCs there plus a current trainee, Natalia. It was a great evening and we are looking forward to our next event which will be at the end of May or beginning of June. Stay tuned for more details!

Nov 2013: AIESEC Colorado Holds Fall Event

Posted By Colorado Hub, Monday, October 27, 2014

Happy Alums mingling with LC members

Over 40 alums and current LC members mingled at Amato's Ale House in Denver which has 40 beers on tap and overlooks the Denver skyline. It was an opportunity to catch up with some old friends and also meet some new faces. Tanner Ryan, LCP Boulder, announced the new AIESEC Boulder LCP (Gabi Murillo) and Rebecca True gave an update on their success of hosting the Fall Regional Conference despite the devastating floods around that timeframe. It was also great that we had two alums attend from AIESEC Denver (Greg Sobetski and Kevin Bell) as being a new LC this is the first year that any AIESECers from AIESEC Denver have existed!

One goal of the event was to rally alumni participation in AIESEC Life's 2013 Membership Drive.  Each year, AIESEC Life allocates 8 weeks where hubs across the country compete to see which city can generate the most annual memberships for AIESEC Life. This year, our nationwide goal is 150 membership activated and our Colorado hub has played a huge role in helping us achieve that.  During the Fall campaign, we got nearly 20 AIESEC Life memberships and with 50% of the funds going back to the hub, we have more options on future events.

Thanks to everyone that came out in support of AIESEC!

May 2013: AIESEC Alums Connect in Colorado

Posted By Colorado Hub, Thursday, September 25, 2014

Great food and drink

(By Kim Benson, AIESEC Life Hub Leader Colorado)

Over 20 alums and 20 current LC members came together for an evening of food, drink and cheer on April 24 in Denver, Colorado. The event was hosted by Alumnus and AIESEC Life Chairman of the Board Jeff Popiel (’90-’96) at his business, Geotech Environmental. The purpose of the evening was to kick off the first major event of the AIESEC Life Hub in Colorado and generate leads for the LC. With alums spanning from the mid-70s to 2011, there were many stories told about how AIESEC had changed (keeping track of all the different acronyms!), and how AIESEC had stayed the same (dedicated focus on international exchange and having fun).

Kim Benson, Hub Leader for Colorado, kicked off the event with a roll call. While most of the alums were from Colorado, we had an alum visiting from D.C. and also an alum from AIESEC Kansas! Colorado’s 5 trainees who hail from China, Mexico, Spain, Tunisia and the Czech Republic were introduced, and AIESEC Colorado’s LCP, Tanner Ryan, shared great news that AIESEC Colorado is BACK and better than ever! They have ambitious plans for 2013 in raising traineeships, while also providing a large number of opportunities for LC members to go abroad. Since the event, AIESEC Colorado was selected to host the Fall RoKS regional conference in October. Congratulations AIESEC Colorado! Finally Jeff Popiel encouraged all the Alums present to find a way to give back to AIESEC. Give leads, give time, give ideas, give money….whatever makes sense, but give back to the organization that gave you some of the best times of your life!

In interacting with the alumni present, many were reminded about how much AIESEC had impacted their lives. Alum Richard Westfall, went to Japan on a traineeship in the mid-1970s and described it as "one of the most amazing experiences of my life.”  Adam Karas joined AIESEC in 1991 and spent 6 years in AIESEC, taking different roles and responsibilities that included working for AIESEC US and AIESEC International. He described the major benefit of being a part of AIESEC, "AIESEC provided me a platform to gain valuable practical skills, which I was not able to learn in college.” In addition,"AIESEC broadened my vision and provided me with the opportunities to meet people from diverse cultures, especially through international conferences.”  Alumna Melissa Hamm, who was an LCP in 2000, stated that "AIESEC has no doubt been very beneficial to me in my professional life. AIESEC provided an opportunity for me to learn how to run a business from different perspectives, such as finance, recruitment, and teamwork.  AIESEC is not just a student club!

We are planning our next alumni event for the end of the summer. If you have any ideas for activities or locations, let Kim Benson know at AIESEChubco@gmail.com.

March 2013: Denver Alums Gather In Spite the Cold

Posted By Colorado Hub, Thursday, September 25, 2014

Denver alumni gathered together in late February for the inaugural launch of the new hub led by alumna Kim Benson.  Approximately 35 people attended at the Highland Tap & Burger despite a snowstorm that day. Attendees included various alumni along with students from the AIESEC chapters at Colorado and Denver. Everyone had a great time sharing stories about how they joined AIESEC and all of their great experiences.    Several new connections were also made.  One current trainee, Hector Moyeton, shared how we went on a traineeship to Romania only to find another alum who shared that exact same connection. What's more, several alumni expressed an interest in taking a trainee from the local committees.  Overall, it was a good launch for the new AIESEC Life Hub in Colorado!  Please look for more information regarding the April 24th alumni event to be held in conjunction with the upcoming Board of Advisors meeting to be hosted by Jeff Popiel in Geotech's offices.
